Running Head: What Did I Learn In Psychology

What Did I Learn In Psychology: Analysis of Theory

Carlos Guevara

“The conscious mind may be compared to a fountain playing in the sun and falling back into the great subterranean pool of subconscious from which it rises.”(Freud). When we think the first thing that came to our minds is crazy people or professionals treating them; this was one of my thoughts before I take a Psychology class. Psychology is used every day in the world by a psychologist, psychiatrists, normal people, and students; it is an important element in the world that constantly help people to become better human beings. In this class I learned three important things that I was thinking totally wrong about psychology; the meaning of it, how some scientist experiment with animals (Harlow’s studies), and experiment with humans (little Albert experiment “classical conditioning).

The first thought that I had of psychology was of crazy people treating freaking people, and as soon as I started this class I realized that my Ideas about psychology were wrong. I can describe Psychology as a science that deals with both theoretical and practically, the study of biological, social and cultural aspects of human behavior, both social and individual levels, as well as the operation and development of the human mind. Psychology what it basically does is directly study individuals, but also often used some laboratory animals for studies, whose behaviors are in some cases equivalent to the humans, and focuses on how they feel, think, how they adapt to the environment in which they live and how this also defined, then all findings product of that analysis and direct observation, will become in theories to learn, explain and even predict future actions. For some years, consulting psychologists or therapists has become a habit: some problems of stress between work/family and other relationships, many also by problems of working life, as it can be worn couples or too many attend psychological therapies as a way to unravel the past, know their traumas and fears, to handle them, overcome them and strengthen their personality in the face of new projects or challenges in life, whether academic, labor, sentimental, among others. Psychology for me is more than one way to interpret the mind of the human being, becoming different theories that help people every day.

Another point that changed my mind with psychology was the experiment with animals, I did not know that some scientist were experimenting with animals to know more about psychology and to find more theories about it. “According to this legend, Harlow showed that maternal care in infancy was essential for adult sexual adjustment and mental health. This work thus corroborated in nonhuman primates the views of psychoanalysts such as John Bowlby and René Spitz, who argued that maternal deprivation had devastating consequences for children’s emotional development.” (Harlow). This experiment conducted studies that provided a breakthrough in the study of attachment because it demonstrated its importance in the social and cognitive development of the subject. However, this researcher had many detractors by the sometimes-dubious morality of his work. The study with rhesus monkeys This concept led to the creation mothers "surrogates" who were some dolls built in two versions, one a wire and had food, and another was plush but lacked food. Harlow found that the young mother preferred the plush, even though it could not provide food. Thus, he concluded that the link between mothers and calves went far beyond food; hatchlings needed to develop psychologically establish contact. When Harlow pups exposed to stressful situations as a new habitat, they went in search of shelter plush mothers that gave them greater protection. The sense of security provided plush mothers made the young feel able to explore, turning to his mother every so often to ensure that they were still there. At the time Harlow separated the pups from mothers and led to new contexts, began to show symptoms of anxiety: crying, shouting, finger sucking and soft objects looked like his mother. When returning to depositing in the original cage in which the mother was plush, the young monkey went straight to them and stood motionless beside her, reluctant to abandon them.
