This course was originally only a small project I made up for myself to train the material

presented on the German website www.sindarin.de with additional texts and some

structure in terms of lessons. It clearly got out of hand since then.

As I write these lines, the second German version is out for download, as far as I can

observe the course has become one of ’the’ standard documents for German Sindarin students

in the web-based community (before they move on to www.ardalambion.com ),

an exercise book is being prepared and I wrote a similar Quenya course which is now being

reviwed. So— here’s the English translation.

I think for a beginner the charm of this course is that he or she is confronted with Sindarin

texts from the very beginning, thus one has the opportunity to get into the feeling

of how this language is used, which is hard to imagine if one reads through one of Helge

Fauskanger’s essay — these are certainly much better from a linguistic point of view but

I think most of the readers do not want to become linguists but rather just use the language.

the intricate background of the material presented here, then Helge Fauskanger’s article

http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/sindarin.htm is the best place to look.The genitive singular is often expressed using the article en which can roughly be translated

as ’of’. It is only used if the ’possessor’ of something is a general noun like in

cabed en aras (leap of the deer)

If the possessor is known, or is a Name, or is deliberately indefinite, the article en is left

out:

aran Gondor (king of Gondor)

aras aran (a deer of a king)

In some circumstances (see lesson 12) the form en is shortened to e. In plural, the genitive

is expressed using in

aran in erais (king of the deers)
