PROLOGO

PREFACE

El GUITARRON es un inslrumenlo de
cuerda similar en funciones al contrabajo,
pero con una sonoridad y una forma de
ejecutarse muy peculiares, ya que el gui-
tarrón por regla general debe tocarse a
DOBLE CUERDA, por octavas.

Desafortunadamente, nadie se habia
preocupado por escribir una guia o método
que indicara la forma correcta de ejecutar
este instrumento, no obstante su importan-
cia básica en los conjuntos musicales donde
se utiliza como el MARIACHI, grupo neta-
mente mexicano que se ha extendido a
muchos paises fuera de México.

He querido intentar algo a! respecto,
considerando que mi forma de ejecutarlo
ha resultado satisfactoria y deseo compar-
tir la experiencia adquirida en mi trabajo y
con varios alumnos, donde he obtenido
resultados muy positivos, orientando a
quienes deseen tocar debidamente este
instrumento, ya que la mayoría ignora la
técnica apropiada para tocar a doble
cuerda.

Me queda sólo la esperanza deque fruc-
tifique este intento de enseñar la forma
como yo ejecuto el guitarrón, y de que se
aprecie mi buena voluntad, confiando que
mi labor sea de algún beneficio para el arte
y para los que se inician en el aprendizaje
de este instrumento.

The GUITARRON is a stringed instru-
ment similar in fuction to the string bass,
but with a very unique sound and playing
technique. since the guitarrón as a general
rule is played DOUBLE-STRING, in oc-
taves.

Unfortunately. no one has previously
taken the trouble to write a guide or method
indicating the correct form of playing the
instrument, in spite of its importance as a
basic instrument in musical groups such as
the MARIACHI, a uniquely Mexican
ensemble which has extended to many
countries outside of México

I have attempted to do something lo thal
respect. considering Ihat my form of play-
ing has given satisfactory results. and I
wish to share my experience acquired
through work and with various students
with whom I have obtained quite positive
results, orienting those who wish to play
the instrument correctiy. since the majority
ignore the appropriate technique for play-
ing double-string,

I oniy hope that this intenl to teach my
form of playing the guitarrón is successful
and that my efforts are taken in good faith.
confident that this work will be of benefit to
the art and to those who undertake the
study of the instrument.

INTRODUCCION

Para estudiar GUITARRON no es indispensable poseer constitución robusta ni estatura
elevada o manos superdesarroíladas. Lo que se necesita es entusiasmo, dedicación, mucha
voluntad y por supuesto que le guste el instrumento. Muchas personas piensan que tocar
guitarrón es fácil y no es asi, ya que presenta sus dificultades como todos los instrumentos
musicales. Además tiene una singular característica: las cuerdas están demasiado alejadas
del diapasón, y es necesario un mayor esfuerzo de la mano izquierda al oprimirlas. Foresto
se forman callosidades en los cinco dedos de la mano y de igual manera se forman en los
dedos pulgar, índice, y medio de la mano derecha, ya que la función de esta mano es tirar de
las cuerdas hacia arriba, como se explicará adelante.

INTRODUCTION

In order to studythe GUITARRON it is not indispensable to haveastrongconstitution, be
tall in stature. or possess super-developed hands. What is necessary is enthusiasm, dedication,
a great deal of will power and, of course. a liking for the instrument. Many peoplethink that
the guitarrón is easy to play, but this is not the case, as it presents problems like all other
musical instruments. What is more, it has a unique characteristic: the strings are very high
off the neck, making great strength necessary in the left hand to depress them. As a result,
callouses form on the five fingers of the left hand and, in a similar manner, on the thumb,
Índex, and middie fingers of the right hand which function to pulí the strings in an upward
motion, as I will subsequently explain.
