Scientific name: Panthera leo

What is their habitat?

Lions live in open fields provided: semi-desert areas, grassy plains, savannas and small formations of forest and scrub. They live in rough areas of Africa from the southern Sahara to Botswana, and Asia is a population of 300 lions in the Gir reserve (India).

How are you physically?

This large felid, considered the king of the animals, is the most arrogant and powerful existing carnivore. There are two subspecies: the African and the Asian.

Most lions that survive today are African. Their weight ranges between 150 and 200 kilos. The male has a height of 1 meter and the female between 80 and 90 inches. Its teeth is complete, presenting the hook-shaped canines. The premolars and molars are endowed with sharp edges. From the third year of age, the male has the head and front of the body covered by a thick mane, usually yellowish or blackish reddish. Its claws are extremely strong and have large retractable claws.

What do they eat?

They feed preferably zebras and wildebeest, although capable of killing adult male buffalo, Kaffir or Giraffe.

How does it reproduce?

Their gestation is 110 days and born of 2-3 cubs. At birth have dark spots all over the body, which later disappear, and measure about 30 cm. length to which the mother breastfeeds for six months.

Although the figure of the male with abundant mane, symbolizes strength and power, females are actually based society of lions, since they raise the puppies, hunt and defend the territory. When the female has finished hunting, males tend them away from the dam, and they are the first to eat. Then will the females and cubs.
