HYPOTHERMIA EXPERIMENTS (1941)

The experiments of hypothermia had the objective to simulate the

conditions that the German troops experienced in the front of the east. The

German soldiers were ill-prepared for the weather conditions they were

experiencing on the battlefield. In this way, thousands of them died due to

the effects of the freezing or were disqualified for combat due to the wounds

caused by the cold.

The selection was made between Jews and young Russians

The experiments were divided into two parts:

1. Try to establish the time it takes them to lower body temperature to

the point of causing death.

2. They analyzed the most efficient ways to resuscitate them.

The methods used were to place the subject in a tub with cold water

or expose the naked to subzero temperatures outdoors.

In preparation, a thermometer was inserted rectally, which was to

record the temperature drops. This thermometer was secured by an

expandable metal ring that snapped open inside the rectum. This was

placed in the tub of ice water. The most of them lost consciousness and

died when the temperature dropped to 25 ° C.

The second way to freeze them was to tie it naked on a pole and leave

it out in the open. The extreme winters of Auschwitz made it the natural

place to carry out these experiments.

The experiments of resuscitation and heating were as cruel and

painful as the freezing experiments.
