Corynebacterium diphtheriae

Diphtheria Diphtheria toxin is responsible for the signs and symptoms of diphtheria; inhibits polypeptide synthesis which results in cell death. Diphtheria is an upper respiratory tract illness characterized by sore throat, low fever, and an adherent membrane (called a pseudomembrane) on the tonsils, pharynx, and/or nasal cavity. Toxigenesis: bacterial production of the toxin.
