RESUMEN
Esta publicación surge a raíz de lo que a lo largo de mi carrera como docente, me heencontrado con muchas situaciones en las cuales los estudiantes siempre se preguntan ¿porqué debo estudiar ingeniería industrial? Se describe lo que ha sucedido con la ingenieríaindustrial a través del tiempo en nuestro país, en un contexto de competitividad y como uningeniero industrial debe enfrentarse a los retos que se le presentan en su actuar diario parapoder ser competitivos. Se incluye un relato acerca de la productividad y su relación con laingeniería industrial, concluyendo con los roles que debe desempeñar un ingenieroindustrial para que tengamos una mejor sociedad y un futuro mas prominente.

ABSTRACT
This article is a product of my teaching work in which I have founded many situations,where students always ask themselves: Why should I study Industrial Engineering? Here itis described what has happened with Industrial Engineering in our country, in a competitioncontext, and how an Industrial Engineer must accomplish goals in his day to day work to becompetitive. It’s included a relation about productivity and Industrial Engineering, endingwith the roles that an Industrial Engineer should have so that we have a better society and amore prominent future.
