Español 2-3 - La Familia

CONTEXT

The family unit is the building block of our society. Although "family" can mean different things to different people, in essence, a family is a group of people (usually genetically related) that provide a support system to one another. In this project you will explore your family lineage, and make comparisons among different family members. Through the tasks and activities you will perform in this project, you will continue developing your communication skills (writing, reading, speaking, understanding) to be able to communicate more effectively with people who speak Spanish.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

What is my family history? In what ways are families different? In what ways are families alike?

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS:

There are innate similarities and differences among families and within individual family members. There is specific vocabulary and grammar concepts (i.e.: possessive adjectives, ser vs. estar, present progressive) in Spanish that can be used to describe a family and make comparisons among different family members.

DESCRIPTION: All of the work you completed in previous units has helped you prepare for this project. The vocabulary and grammar concepts you have learned will be great resources to help you incorporate a variety of previous and new vocabulary, variations in sentence structure, and accurate verb conjugations. In this project, you will reflect on your family and its history, create a family multi-generation family tree, write a general description of your family, write a comparison of two of your family members, and present everything to your classmates. By completing this project, you will be able to effectively apply family vocabulary, possessive adjectives, ser vs. estar, and the present progressive tense in a written and oral presentation about your family.

To be considered proficient, your project must include the following components:

  • A multi-generation family tree that includes at least 3 generations and at least 12 people total.
  • At least one paragraph, in Spanish, describing your family using specific guiding questions.
  • At least two paragraphs, in Spanish, comparing at least two of your family members using specific guiding questions.
  • A visual component that includes your family tree and a visual for each of the guiding questions of your family description and family member descriptions.
  • Correct integration and use of family vocabulary, possessive adjectives, ser vs. estar, and the present progressive tense.
  • An oral presentation, in Spanish, describing your family and the two family members you wrote about.

STEPS:

  1. Engage with the theme of the project, and complete a written brainstorm on your family and its history.
  2. Answer specific questions about your family, and use these to write a coherent paragraph describing your family in general terms.
  3. Create a family tree with at least 3 generations and 12 family members.
  4. Answer specific questions about two of your family members, and use these to write two coherent paragraphs comparing the similarities and differences between your two family members.
  5. Create a multimedia presentation about your family and the two family members you compared.
  6. Prepare for and practice your oral presentation.
  7. Present your project to the class.

GRADING:

Your project will be evaluated based on these cognitive skills. You will have opportunities to revise and resubmit your work. The following descriptions are for level 6 of the rubric.
