  • Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19th, 1809. Poe’s father and mother, died before the poet was three years old and John and Frances Allan raised him as a foster child in Richmond, Virginia.
  • His uncles, sent him to the best boarding schools and later to the University of Virginia, where Poe excelled academically and after a year, he was forced to leave the university when Allan refused to pay Poe’s gambling debts.
  • In Baltimore, Maryland, Poe began to sell short stories to magazines and, in 1835, he became the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond.
  • In 1836, he married his cousin, Virginia, who was fourteen years old at the time.
  • He established himself as a poet, a short story writer, and an editor. He published some of his best-known stories and poems, including “The Fall of the House of Usher," “The Tell-Tale Heart," “The Murders in the Rue Morgue," and “The Raven.”
  • After Virginia’s death from tuberculosis in 1847, Poe’s lifelong struggle with depression and alcoholism worsened.
  • On October 3, 1849, he was found in a state of semi-consciousness. Poe died four days later of “acute congestion of the brain.” Evidence by medical practitioners who reopened the case has shown that Poe may have been suffering from rabies.

The Cask of Amontillado

         

Plot Beginning

1. Montresor is tired of the treatment of Fortunato, insults and injustices, he plans to do something to get revenge.

 1.1. One day, Montresor find Fortunato in the middle of a carnival to tell him about receiving a cask of Amontillado.

1.2. Montresor has his doubts about it, that is why he goes with Fortunato, because he is a great wine connoisseur.

1.3. At some point, Montresor insists on asking Luchesi, saying he does not want to interrupt, but Fortunato refuses and asks to be himself to go with Montresor.

 1.4. Montresor and Fortunato go into the cellars to find the Acantillado.

 1.5. Montresor insists on returning for Fortunato's illness, but he refuses, saying he will not die for a simple cough.

 1.6 They drink for a "long life" 

Clímax

2. Montresor and Fortunato walk through the dark of the cellars.

2.1 While they are walking for the hallways, Montresor says that, inside of one of the walls, there is the Acantillado.

2.3. When Fortunato walks into the interior of the wall, Montresor catches and secures him with chains.

2.4. With some materials, Montresor covers the space where Fortunato is trapped.

2.5. Fortunato starts screaming. Montresor finish protecting the wall so Fortunato does not come out

Setting: This begins in medieval times at a carnival where Montresor begins to plan a revenge on Fortunato, then they made a passage to the catacombs to end Fortunato's life and that's where the story unfolds

Tone: The feeling that predominates in this story is hatred, resentment and revenge towards Fortunato since it is the person who wants to kill in the story, but also in some points of history Montresor doubt of wanting to kill him.
