The Battle of Pichincha took place on May 24, 1822 between the patriotic forces led by Antonio José de Sucre and the royalist troops led by Melchor Aymerich. The crash occurred on the slopes of Pichincha volcano in Quito, Ecuador today.

The patriot army consisted of 2900 men, most grancolombinos ( Paya battalions , Magdalena and Yaguachi ) and Peru ( Trujillo and Piura battalions ) . There were also British and Argentine. The royalists had 3000 soldiers.

Sucre had led his troops from Guayaquil to Quito, with the goal of expelling the Spanish in this city. After many hardships reached the Pichincha volcano May 23, 1822. During the night he ordered the rise and at dawn on May 24 had earned good height. But the Spaniards spotted and climbed the volcano to face.

In the violent clash Patriots battalions fought bravely, but they had little ammunition and suffered heavy casualties from enemy fire. When it seemed that the triumph was in favor of the Spaniards appeared on the heights battalion Albion (English), with ammunition and reinforcements. The Patriots returned to the charge and managed to disrupt and put to flight the enemy.

The patriot victory led to the release of Pichincha Quito and its annexation to the Republic of Gran Colombia, whose president was Don Simon Bolivar. The Liberator made his triumphal entry into Quito on June 16, 1822.
