What Is Depression?

According to the Oxford Dictionary of American English, depression is a feeling of unhappiness and lack of hope that lasts for a long time. There are several types of depressions which affect people. A type of depression called clinical depression makes it hard for people to study, work, and sleep or even eat. Depression is caused by many factors. Often cases involved with depression is being bullied or having experienced the loss of a family member. Mental, physical or sexual abuse also increase the factors of falling into depression.

Studies show that states with high rates of depression also show high rates of other negative issues such as obesity, heart disease and strokes. Globally, more than 350 million people from all age groups suffer from depression. Women are shown to be more affected by depression than men. 18-20 year olds are 70% more likely to have experienced or fall in a

depression. This group’s most common cause is bullying. Bullying has shown to be one of the most common causes which happen mostly in schools to lead to a depression.

Depression is also tied with persons with too much weight. Some people that suffer too much depression gain weight. As a result of gaining too much weight, people’s self-esteem drops. Another outcome of depression is suicidal thoughts which often

leads to people committing suicide. Most people who commit suicide don’t really want to die; they just want their pain and suffering to end. Teens usually show to alienate themselves from their families during a depression.

In conclusion, people should get help from other people or get treatment. There are various types of treatments to help one who is experiencing a depression. Teens and kids should seek help from adults with the situation they are experiencing. One must recognize these people aren’t recognizing that there is a solution to their problems. These examples, causes, and effects show what depression really is. Depression makes you feel despair and lose hope, but with help and optimism one can overcome it.
