The movie called, American Beauty comes from playing with traditional ideas of "American-ness". One of the dominant stereotypes of American culture is that Americans are obsessed with work and don't know how to enjoy life, how to enjoy with family and all the stereotypes that are in their society.

Development:

I choose the scene where the “Lester Burnham” is murdered and He says:

I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined our street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday.

I choose this scene because he stated what people said about the moment before dying. And where he knew that all life and the entire world is beautiful, and no matter how angry you feel, you need to relax and watch what it is. He stated that world is so beautiful that sometimes he could not hold it.

The impact in the character is that he saw the beautifulness of the world too late, but he was grateful about everything that happened in his life.

Conclusion:

This movie shows us some stereotypes about the American living, the guy next door thought in a stereotype, in this case about the homosexuality. This guy is a retired marine, but he thought that he could be gay, so he misunderstood the intentions about his neighbor. When he tried something with him, the other man refused about it. And that’s why he killed him, juts to try to cover his sexual preference, and how immerse he is in the stereotype of a U.S. marine.
