Bottlenose Dolphins

Bottlenose dolphin’s lives in different part of the worlds, they are different kind of dolphins which they also travel in large groups called pods which can be up to 20 or 30 dolphins. There has always been a saying that a dolphin can kill a shark, this all depends if it’s a dolphin one on one the shark will win in most cases the dolphins do win because like how they travel in large groups it’s usually more than one dolphin.

It is believed that dolphins have evolved from a wolf like creature called tursiops truncates who use to walk on land many years ago then grew hind legs which allowed him to go in the water and just kept evolving to the creature he is now, when the babies are born you can see the hair follicle on their that drop right out after their born.

Dolphins anatomy, the dolphins mouth which is now as it’s rostrum is one of the strongest part of their body it’s as hard as a baseball bat it’s one of what they use to defend their self in the wild, in the mouth we have their teeth which are not sharp like a shark, dolphins don’t chew their food they eat it whole and when the swallow their fish the swallow it head first this way the gills and everything from the fish will go down flat. The dolphins eye, it is believed that dolphins cannot see color something not proven yet but dolphins have what we can call a six sense in which they use their melon it’s a fat tissue over their head, this six sense is call echolocation which is what they use to see, hunt. Echolation is where they send out sounds and the sound bounces back to their lower jaw (their low jaw is very hollow) and it sends them a picture of the object before they even get to it or dig it up, this is a special kind of sonar that not only dolphins but whales and porpoises use too, the use of this sense helps them in murky waters when hunting for fishes they can see what’s under the sand before the dig it up. The only area dolphins breathe from is a hole on top of their heads called the blowhole which the only breath when they come up to the surface of the water all the sounds comes from their blowhole, their sounds is also a way for them to communicate with each other. Pectoral fins are the ones they use to navigate it they are the only fins in the body that has bones these fins help them stare where they want to go all the other fins like the dorsal fin which is located on the top of their backs is made of cartilage like our ears and nose, the fluke also known as the tail is made of the same thing also, the fluke is one of the most powerful parts of the dolphins body this is where most of their strength is, all the behaviors we see them do like the jumps or tail walks is from the power of their fluke, it’s also one of what they use to defend their self in the wild. There is no way to identify the sex of a dolphin by just looking at them, the way to determine this is by turning the dolphin upside down and by their genital area this is where you can tell them apart. Dolphins have a belly button just like us right below the below button is their genital area for male have on slit and anal it all looks like a straight line. The female also have this slit but on both sides they have two smaller slits that are their mammary glands which the nipples are held in to breast feed their calf when their calves are born they born with tentacles around their tongue like small little fingers so the can be able to wrap it around the mammary glands really tight so no water gets in.

A lot of people are against keeping dolphins in captivity they believe that dolphins should be free to live in the wild, but like how dolphins travel in large pods of groups up to fifty dolphins sometimes it’s hard for them to find food. The dolphins at RIMS are fed four times a day if they wanted to leave they can, they do programs where they take the dolphins out of the pen into open water, instead of staying with the guests
