In favor of child labour.

The 1800s had no welfare. Injured workers have no disability. Women have no rights and other than prostitution, there aren't actually many jobs a woman can perform and most do not pay enough to support one person, much less a family. Your father is permanently injured and your mom makes pittance doing laundry for others. You are a primary breadwinner.

How about an actual example in my family? My great-great-uncle was killed when he tried to stop a runaway stagecoach. He had 6 children. Three had to work in the mills and the other 3 did all the farmwork once they were about 3. My great-great-aunt, already having problems with depression and health after her 6th child did the cooking and caring for the infants. By the time she died, the oldest was old enough to own the property; otherwise, the kids would have been shipped to orphanages, who in turn, would have farmed them out as workers. By allowing the children to work, they stayed together.

Congress passing these laws DID protect some children, but it also destroyed a lot of families by eliminating a needed income stream in a time when there was no welfare.

The child earns something to support its parents financially

When engaged in some service, he gets no time to indulge in drugs, petty crimes and other nefarious activities.

He comes to understand the ways of the world at a very early age.He could never learn this while at some school.

The child learns the real value of money earned.

He learns a trade which supports him as his age advances.

Despite the points mentioned above, since you asked for it, I am dead against any sort of child-labour.. It is the responsibility of the society to ensure that each child has the opportunity to enjoy its childhood.

There were several factors that led to support for child labor. The majority of the jobs were labor-oriented positions in agriculture and industry. The business people saw children as a solution to their labor problems brought on by the increased need for the expanding population. Families saw their children working as a means to get additional revenue and goods for the house. I say goods because many children worked in exchange for other things instead of money, i.e. a child working for the landlord to help pay the rent due on the house or as part of the agreement between the parent and landlord. Parents, primarily fathers, would often bargain with labor of their children to pay debts incurred from stores, individuals and corporations.
