UNIT OF MEASURE USED IN GUATEMALA
Guatemalans use the metric system, but also some traditional units of measurement (that come from Spain) and influence from US English units. You buy gas by the gallon, drive stretches of road in kilometers, and you plant corn by the curds. Brief history: in May 1910 most of Central America adopted a common system of measurements, and in May 1921 Guatemala became officially metric. Therefore, all road distances are in km; Guatemalan specific is that ALL roads have their distances measured from a spot that is located in the entrance of former presidential palace, now called National palace.
The square yard or square rod is commonly used in land transactions in Guatemala and 10,000 square yards equal one apple. One square yard equals 0.6987 square meters (7.521 ft2), while one apple equals 6,987 square meters (1.727 acres). A Spanish pound is 460 grams.
Among the Guatemalan units of measurement some are based on old Spanish units; they include the rod and block linear measurements; the square yard, the “apple” like units of area; and the pound, arroba, quintal and carboy units of weight and volume.
These are the units of measure used in Guatemala today:
Weight Measures Used in Home and for laboratory.
In Guatemala we use the international system of units for calibration and calculation of quantities. But in Guatemala are conflicts with this measurement system because we used the English System.
The basic unit is the Pound.
For laboratory processes pound consists of 453.59237 Grams.
Putting 25 pounds is created the Arroba.
Putting 100 pounds is created the Quintal.
Putting 20 Quintals is created Ton.
These are the measures used by the general population.
QUINTAL
The Quintal contains 4 kilos, or 100 pounds. We write q.
Arroba
The @ contains 25 pounds. We write @. Deliver it Libra has 16 ounces. Abbreviated: Lb.
Ounce
The ounce contains 38.35 grams. It represents Oz.
GRAM
A gram equals one thousand milligrams.
Kilogram.
Recently started using the kilogram in Guatemala. A kilogram is 1,000 grams. That is 2.20 pounds. Abbreviated Kg
Ton.
In the Anglo-Saxon originally refers to large barrel with a capacity of 252 gallons, containing about 2016 pounds of water. This barrel is still called in British English ton.
The pound.
The Pound (lb.) is a unit of mass used since ancient Rome. The word derived from the Latin meaning "scale or balance" and represents the primary unit of weight and mass used and adopted in Anglo-Saxon countries.
Distance Measures Used in Home
Originally distances in Guatemala are mediated through the unit called "Vara" based Castilian 3 feet, approximately 0.85 cm.
This measure was used for a long time in Guatemala but faded away by the use of the International System of Units.
Therefore, all road distances are in km; Guatemalan specific is that ALL roads have their distances measured from a spot that is located in the entrance of former presidential palace, now called National palace.
Now recognized as the basis of distance measures by meter.
These are the more common units of measures:
1. 100 centimeters equals 1 meter.
2. 1000 meters equals one Kilometer.
These are the not common units of measures in Guatemala; we rarely use but, in the laboratory and in the industry are more common use those.
3. 1 meters equivalent to 3.28 ft.
4. 1 foot equals 12 inches.
5. 1 foot equivalent to 30.48 inches.
6. 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters.
