Summary Response Essay

My first thought when I was about to read “Our Fantasy nation?” by Nicholas D. Kristof was, “What is this about?” Then, I started reading and realized that it is exactly what I thought it would be about: Is this the nation that we want? I thought it would be boring and dull because I thought the essay was just going to be about politic stuff and laws. I was wrong though. It was about to make awareness about the road that is taking this nation, and with Kristof’s point of view, a respected writer, giving concerns about the social problem of this nation. He reminds his readers that the focus of this nation have been changing throw the years.

He appeals with real facts such as an interview with G. Jeremiah Ryan president of Bergen Community College in New Jersey in 1965. President Ryan said “When the College was set up in 1965, two thirds of the cost of running it was supposed to be covered by state and local governments, and one-third by students. The reality today is that students bear 78 percent of the cost.” This kind of facts makes credibility to the reader and support the author’s claim.

I really like the paragraph when he start talking in a subtle manner about this problematizing. He exclaim “Mass transit is underfinanced; after all, Mercedes Benzes and private jets are much more practical, no?” He appeals Logos to persuade his audience to believe in his thoughts and became more interested in this tricky problem that involved the whole country.

In my opinion Nicholas D. Kristof is a successful writer because he appeals Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in his articles. His rhetorical has convincing arguments with excellent points of view. It is not surprising that he is a writer for a prestigious journal in the nation.
