Task: Assessment activity

Objectives: in this activity you will have the opportunity to:

  • Design an activity to assess your students’ progress using informal assessment.
  • Put into practice what you have read on assessment.
  • Reflect on the influence assessment can have on children

Methodology: read carefully unit 6 and design an activity to assess your students’ speaking skills informally

Activity: include the following steps:

  • A description of the target group (number of students, age, level, special needs, nationality, mother tongue …).
  • Length of time for the activity.
  • Focus of assessment: what to assess, who is going to be assessed
  • Materials used
  • Classroom arrangement (rows, circles, horseshoes, how the class is organized, whether the teacher is the focus of attention or not, etc.).
  • Lessons procedure: explain in detail the steps you will follow, include examples of the students’ expected outcomes, etc.
  • Explain if your activity takes into account the characteristics of a good test/assessment activity we have studied in this unit: validity, reliability, discrimination, transparency and feasibility.

Please, be original! No ideas taken ready-made material from the internet will be accepted.

Length: minimum 1-maximum 4 pages, Georgia body font size 11,5 , inter-line spacing 1.5, justified.

A description of the target group:

A group of 20 seven years old students with an average level for the age and no special needs. They are Spanish speakers from Spain and South America.

Length of time for the activity:

The activity last 15 minutes.

Focus of assessment: what to assess, who is going to be assessed:

The focus of assessment is listening comprehension. We will find out if the new  vocabulary was understood. At the same time, we will get feedback of any lack of information or misunderstanding.

Materials used:

Students will need a piece of paper and pen/pencil.

Classroom arrangement:

They will be sitting on the floor forming a big circle.

Lessons procedure:

First, the teacher will explain the instructions of the activity. Then, they will be sitting on the floor to start the “game”.

They need to pay attention to the word the teacher says and they can choose among writing down the word in English, in Spanish or to draw it. They have a bit of time and then they will hear the next one. It will be a short activity, no more than 5 or 6 words.

Once we are done with the list of vocabulary, they need to pass their piece of paper to the right side to let their peer correct it. If there are any mistakes, they will give the paper to the teacher. If not, they can keep it.

From there, teacher can double check mistakes to see if there is anything he/her can do to improve the comprehension of the word.

This activity pretends to be motivating and fun for our students, but also a good way to assess their progress with a big picture of the situation and avoiding particular corrections from the teacher.

Validity: We are evaluating listening comprehension, that's why they can draw or write, both.

Reliability: They will get the same results no matter how many times they repeat the excercise, because teacher can repeat the word as much as they need.

Discrimination: Students can detect mistakes from their peers but also the teacher will double check it so it's clear how was the performance.
