Crime in Peru

“All crime is a kind of disease and should be treated as such” –Mahatma Gandhi

Crime is a constant problem in Lima and most other parts of Peru, and in these times, requires a very deep study and a quick solution, since many problems are getting worst. Some of the problems are extortion, robbery, terrorism and more.  Many people are too scared to leave their home because of a fear of crime. Some people think that more should be done to prevent crime, while others feel that nothing can be done. But, why do criminals do what they do and how can we stop them? A person doesn't kill or steal because he was born as a criminal, they become that way because of the familiar environment, immoral society, and the corruption in the government doesn't help.

Crime in this country is getting worst every day. And what scares most of people, is extortion. So when a person has a company, no matter whether it’s big or not, they have to pay to criminals big amounts of money, so criminals won’t hurt them or their families. Extortion is an easy way to get money, they ask for it, and they get it. And if they don’t get what they want, they’ll kill, no matter what gets on their way.

Violent crime has increased over the last few years, especially robbery. Usually, thieves work in teams in crowded markets, bus depots and train stations, targeting anyone who looks like they've got money. Armed robberies, assaults, pickpocketing, purse snatching, “smash and grab” robberies, the theft of items from unoccupied vehicles, and the theft of vehicle parts are common crimes. All these crimes are a daily fact of life. Some robbers do it because of necessity, whereas others think that robbery it’s a “Job”. After they steal, they sell it, so they get money.

Lately, it has been seen more youth criminals than adults criminals. Most of them are around the age of 16 to 20. And it all begins with their childhood. They are influenced by the environment in which they are surrounded. Some of them are relatives of criminals, and others have grown up with criminals. Some people think that a way to reduce crime is by improving public education and create more opportunities, or if they are grown-ups provide unemployment compensation, job training, and job placement.
