That fear and I admit, I feel a tightening in my stomach typing the words even today was that something would happen to Monk- Monk.

I bonded with him fiercely an rarely let him out of my sight.

When no one else was around, Monk- Monk played endless games with me, soaked up my tears, and listened to my secrets.

And then Uncle Ken came to visit.

He clearly thought it was pretty silly that a big first grader was dragging a sock monkey arround and he teased me by saying he thought he'd take Monk-Monk home to Ohio with him.

I was at school a few days later when Uncle Ken left.

When I came, I couldn't find Monk-Monk anywhere.

I can hardly described the depths of my panic.

I don't think I cried; my terror was beyond that. I could barely breathe.

My thoughts raced like a wild animal in a tiny cage.

Was Monk-Monk lying in a weedy strip along the interstate, lonely and cold, never to be loved again?

When we fund Monk-Monk wedged behind the sofa, I was limp with relief.

As far as I can remember, that near-loss of Monk-Monk was my first encounter with real, deep-down fear.

A friend of mine had the opportunity to work in Florence, Italy, for a few months.

While he was gone, he arranged for his two teenage sons to visit him for a week.

After sitting down to wait for their flights, one nudged the other "Look at the tickets," he told his brother. "They do not said Florence".

Indeed the tickets did not list Florence as the destination. They said "Firenze."

Now, it so happens that Firenze is the Italian name for Florence, so everything was find.

But the boys did not know that.
