Singer and actor Michael Steven Bublé was born on September 9, 1975, in Burnaby, British Columbia. Bublé's father, Lewis, was often out at sea. This left his mother, Amber, and grandfather, Demetrio Santanga, as the primary caregivers for Bublé; and his two younger sisters, Crystal and Brandee.

Michael Buble is a classic jazz and soul singer who cites Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald as his major influences.

Santanga's huge collection of records was the foundation of Bublé's passion for classic jazz and soul music. Thanks to famed artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, it wasn't too long before young Michael decided that he wanted to follow in their famous footsteps. Said Bublé, "I wanted to be a singer and I knew that this was the music that I wanted to sing."

With the encouragement of his grandfather, Bublé entered and won a local talent contest. When the organizer, Beverly Delich, later discovered that Buble was only 17—one year younger than the contest requirements—she disqualified him. Even still, she was so impressed by his talents that she suggested he enter the British Columbia Youth Talent Search instead. Having learned all of his grandfather's favorite tunes, Bublé entered the British Columbia competition and won.

Bublé's success prompted Delich to help him record his first independent CD. In the meantime, Santanga had spread the word that he would offer free plumbing service for anyone who could provide career opportunities for his grandson. Bublé became a regular at several local music venues.

In 1996, Bublé landed a role portraying Elvis in the Vancouver run of the musical Red Rock Diner, and soon caught the eye of Debbie Timuss, a fellow dancer and singer in the production. Two years later, the couple moved to Toronto to perform in the cast of another musical revue; this time a big band effort called Forever Swing (1998).

Bublé's career breakthrough came in 2000 from a quite surprising chain of events. Michael McSweeney, an aide to former Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, saw Bublé's performance at a business party[17] and received a copy of Bublé’s self-financed independent album. McSweeney showed the album to Mulroney and his wife, and his cousin, Jim. Bublé subsequently was invited to sing at the wedding of Mulroney's daughter, Caroline, where he sang Kurt Weill's "Mack the Knife".[17] At the wedding Bublé was introduced toDavid Foster, a multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and record executive who previously had worked with artists such as Madonna, Brandy Norwood, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Céline Dion, Barbra Streisand, Kenny G., Cher, Josh Groban, and Andrea Bocelli.

Initially, Foster was reluctant to sign Bublé to his 143 Records label because he "didn’t know how to market this kind of music." Bublé moved to Los Angeles with his agent for a brief period to convince Foster to sign him. Eventually, Foster agreed to produce an album for him if he raised $500,000 to cover the costs of the production (which Bublé did). Foster ended up covering the costs of production in the end under his label, with no assurances of support from Warner Brothers, and after Bublé received the personal stamp of approval and support of Foster's friend, Paul Anka. After David Foster agreed to produce Bublé’s debut album, Bruce Allen, whom Bublé had pursued for years to be his manager, also signed Bublé.

A CD was released in 2003 of the 7 songs that Bublé sang for Totally Blonde, calling it Totally Bublé. After the success of Michael Bublé's self-titled debut, DRG Records belatedly released the jazzy soundtrack from the 2001 film Totally Blonde in which Bublé had a co-starring role as a nightclub singer/club owner. Capitalizing on Bublé's newfound stardom, DRG Records basically ignored the music's connection to the film by altering the title and putting a shot of Bublé on the cover making it appear as if this was a proper Michael Bublé release.
