ACTIVITY 1.1:  COMMUNICATING WITHIN ORGANIZATIONS

DIRECTIONS OF COMMUNICATION FLOW

For each of the following situations, identify the direction of communication flow (downward, upward, or horizontal).

_____________________ 2.  As the director of production, you are required to attend monthly meetings with the director of marketing and update her on new product development initiatives.

 

_____________________ 3.  You prepare a monthly report for your boss detailing your progress on key projects during the previous month.

 

_____________________ 4.   The president of the company holds a meeting to provide updates on a recent company acquisition.  During this meeting, you learn that your responsibilities will increase, and now include managing products from the newly acquired company. 

 

_____________________ 5.  You just started a new job.  To learn more about the company and its objectives, you have been asked to review a training manual that was created by your boss.

_____________________ 6.  As a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company, you are required to attend a sales meeting to learn about new products you are expected to sell.

_____________________ 7.  A colleague stops by your office to tell you about a recent conversation she had with a co-worker during which she learned about a new procedure that will help you better manage your accounts.

_____________________ 8.  During a recent team meeting, your boss praised your performance on a recent client presentation.

_____________________ 9.  As a marketing manager, you reach out to the director of marketing to let her know about problems you are having with communications with the sales team and explain how these issues are preventing you from achieving your sales goals.

_____________________ 10.  The human resources manager holds a conference call that you attend.  During the call, you learn more about how the company began and the company’s core values.
