                                              SUMMARY

Groundwater is very important because it is the main source of fresh water in the world, so its removal in recent decades has increased. In arid areas such as the department of La Guajira groundwater is a vital resource to address the shortage, and its use is growing steadily. This situation offers a great challenge: finding ways to ensure conservation, sustainable and equitable use of water.

In this sense, the objective of this research was to study the status of groundwater and identify areas that have higher priority to be monitored. For this, a multi-criteria analysis was performed in a GIS environment to the Rio Rancheria, the most important of the Department.

Risk factors were selected for groundwater contamination, the state of water quality and the density of extraction wells.

The study found that areas with high priority for monitoring the Rio Rancheria in the Department of La Guajira are: the South in the towns of Fonseca and Diversion, comprising judges of Buenavista and population centers The Confused, The Prickly Pears and doubt. In North One sector covering Cerrillo, Monguí and Arena, and south of Riohacha Corridor and north of the town of El Abra Center.
