DIRECTIONS: Please answer all of the questions to the best of your knowledge and by using as many resources as you require, viz, the Physics book by Mr. Tippens, the Internet, and other books from the library. By researching these questions, you will gain a more thorough understanding of the ideas behind all of these formulas. THIS is the fun stuff of physics!!! Work in groups of 2-3.

1. Who were Anders Celsius and Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit? Explain why each chose his temperature scale, how each defined his scale, and how their inventions have impacted our world.

2. Who were William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin and William John Macquorn Rankine? Other than their absolute temperature scales, what else were they famous for? (e.g. studies, theories, etc.)

3. Explain the unusual expansion properties of water. Why are these properties significant to life on earth? (e.g. name a process that requires this property)
