The land animals’ population I choose is African Lions.

Identify and explain the following:

o Emergent properties of lions:

• Size:

An estimate of the African lion population size range is between 16,500 and 47,000 living in the wild in 2002–2004. Today, fewer than 21,000 remain in all of Africa.

• Density:

The highest density on Africa is in the reserve Lake Manyara is 2.6 km2per lion.

• Distribution pattern:

Aggregated they hunt in packs to ensure a kill.

• Demographic parameters:

 Birth Rate: Lionesses usually have litters of up to six cubs every two years.

 Mortality Rate: Their mortality rate is high with only 20% of cubs reaching the age of two years.

 Immigration Rate and Emigration Rate:

 They immigrate and emigrate to now south Sahara desert and in parts of southern and eastern Africa.

• Population growth rate:

The population growth rate of lions is decreasing, and maybe in a future this specie could extinct.

• Population structure:

Lions have 2 different types of organization.

Some lions are residents, living in groups, called prides. The pride usually consists of five or six related females, their cubs of both sexes, and one or two males.

The second organizational structure is labeled nomads, who range widely and move about sporadically, either singularly or in pairs

o Factors regulating the populations’ growth:

• Abiotic factors:

-water

-light changes eg. day/night

-temperature

• Biotic factors:

One limiting biotic factor is prey, it's food. Another limiting factor would be available mates.

What does the density factor represent in the emergent properties? Provide a detailed description.

It represents the number of individuals that inform the distance among organisms by area and volume units. This represents a measure of strength in the competition for resources among organisms.

Conclusion:

Ecology says that a population is defined as a group of individuals of the same
