SCIENTIFIC THEORIES

Concerns about the management of the solar system have given many years of observations, studies and debates. Throughout history, the two most popular theories are: geocentrism, developed by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy, and the heliocentric theory, formulated by Nicolas Copernicus.

Geocentric theory

The geocentric model, also called the Ptolemaic system was developed by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the Christian era and included in his book Almagest. According to this theory, the Earth is the center of the solar system and other stars orbiting around it. The stars were fixed in concentric spheres rotating at different speeds.

Ptolemy said that the Sun, Moon and planets revolved around the Earth in the following order: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Geocentrism was defended by the Catholic Church as presented aspects of biblical passages.

However, after fourteen centuries, the geocentric theory was challenged by Copernicus, who developed a structure of another solar system, heliocentrism.

Heliocentric Theory

The heliocentric theory is the astronomical model which holds that the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun heliocentric, was proposed by Aristarchus of Samos Greek, who was based on simple measures of the distance between the Earth and Sun proposed it was the earth that revolved around the sun and not vice versa, as claimed by the geocentric theory accepted at the time, according to the prevailing anthropocentric view. In the sixteenth century, the theory would be formulated by Nicolas Copernicus, one of the most influential astronomers of history. The fundamental difference is that Copernicus used more accurate than Aristarchus mathematical calculations to support his hypothesis.

Precisely because of this, his ideas ushered in what is known as the Scientific Revolution. Not only a major change in astronomy, but in science in general and particularly in the worldview of civilization.
