Lorca Earthquake

We have the impression that solid ground beneath our feet, but it is not. Lithosphere is subject to more or less intense movements, which occur frequently. The movements of the lithosphere are called earthquakes.

Observers recorded annually over thirty thousand. Fortunately, very few reach the category of earthquakes, and most occur in deep ocean. They are called earthquakes, earthquake or earthquakes to shake and soil sudden, highly variable intensity, ranging from mild shocks having only the most sensitive equipment, and heavy devastate cities and carry desolation and death.

Earthquakes can be defined as violent movements of the earth's crust. It occurs in the form of shakes. The main pre lasts several seconds but can register shock of lesser intensity.

On 11 May 2011 the earth shook in Lorca (Murcia), a city of one hundred thousand inhabitants in the south of Spain.

The earthquake has affected public buildings, houses and historical heritage. An estimated 80% of homes were damaged, with some having to be demolished in the months following. The deadly earthquake left nine víctms.

To report on the state of deterioration of housing, Civil Protection and Emergency Military Unit (UME) began to assess the damage. The walls and doors of homes, Civil Protection devised a system of colors: a green sticker indicating that they could access the safe house and live there, a yellow indicated that they could come to collect belongings and get out and a sticker reported that red can not access the home for structural damage. With the passage of time began to make black colored houses and the declaration of ruin.

The government created a Commissioner to coordinate and follow State measures to rebuild the city of Lorca. For the recovery of assets, the Ministry of Culture prepared a Recovery Plan for Cultural Heritage of Lorca.
