An informant told me that many years before he was sitting in a tent one afternoon during a storm, together with an old man and his wife. There was one clap of thunder after another. Suddenly the old man turned to his wife and asked, "Did you hear what was said?", "No", she replied, "I didn't catch it." My informant, an acculturated Indian, told me he did not know at first what the old man and his wife referred to. It was, of course, the thunder. The old man thought that one of the Thunder Birds had said something to him. He was reacting to this sound in the same way as he would respond to a human being whose words he did not understand. 

What do you think happened?

A thunder clapped and the old man thought it was a spirit.

What do you think each person understood by the situation?

The old man thought was a Thunder Bird, his wife believed in him and the informant, thought was a thunder.

Try to re-explain this situation in a way that seems coherent, while trying to explain the events.

A man told me that many years ago he was with an old man and his wife, sitting inside a tent an afternoon during a storm. Suddenly the man turned into his wife and asked her if she heard what was said, and she replied that no. The man, that was an acculturated indian, couldn’t understand. The old man thought that one of the Thunder Birds said something to him, he was answering to that sound as if we was talking with a human being, but it was the thunder of course.
