Popol Vuh

RESUMEN

El Popol Vuh es el libro del “principio de las antiguas historias” de la nación más poderosa

del interior de Guatemala en el siglo XVI, la nación Quiché. También es el libro del “linaje

humano”, el libro que reescribe un original, oculto para los investigadores y pensadores,

sobre la creación de la raza humana. Es una aproximación al saber mesoamericano sobre el

comienzo del hombre, de ciertas especies animales y vegetales, de la tierra y el cosmos. Las

constantes reinvenciones del Popol Vuh, realizadas desde el siglo XVIII, han conservado

ciertos rasgos del pensamiento y la expresión de condición oral del pueblo maya-quiché.

La palabra oral siempre constituye la modificación de una situación existencial total que

invariablemente envuelve al cuerpo. En este sentido, puede afirmarse que la teatralidad es

consustancial a las culturas orales.

ABSTRACT

The Popol Vuh is the book of the “beginning of the ancient stories” of the most powerful

nation in the interior of Guatemala in the sixteenth century. It is also the book of “human

lineage”, the book that rewrites the original, hidden from the researchers and thinkers,

about the creation of the human race. It is an approximation of mesoamerican knowledge

about the beginnings of man, of certain animal species and vegetation, of the earth and

the cosmos. The constant reinventions of the Popol Vuh, realized since the eighteenth

century, have conserved certain features of the thought and expression, oral in nature, of

the maya-quiché people. The word oral always constitutes the modification of a total

existential situation that includes the body. In this sense it can be affirmed that theatricality

is consubstantial to oral cultures.
