Facebook vs Twitter

Both Facebook and Twitter are social network sites designed to allow users to connect with other users over the Internet. Facebook users connect with other users by searching the name of the person and become "friends." Similarly, Twitter users search for other Twitter users and connect with them by "following" their Twitter accounts. Even though each website calls this act by a different name, the goal of connecting other users is the same on both sites.

Both Facebook and Twitter allow their users to express their ideas, opinions, and questions to other people in the network. Facebook encourages users to express their feelings by updating their “status”, while Twitter users "tweet" their thoughts.

Furthermore, both facebook and twitter has a profile column that introduces the user. This profile column can be seen by anyone as it helps to identify whether this person is your friend or not. Both facebook and twitter has a photo album page where you can upload pictures. People use this feature to inform their friends of their recent activities. Although this may seem like too much private information on the internet, the privacy settings allows the users to keep their status or tweets private and personal.

On the other hand, there are some differences. Facebook was originally created for University students to get in contact with the opposite sex (similar to a dating site). It was a way for college students to have the chance to meet friends of friends and hopefully find a person that they fancy. However, twitter was created so that one can express their inner feelings with the chance of other people joining in the response thread (not for purposes like meeting people, but to use between people you know). Of course, the people who are eligible to tweet back are people who are already friends with in some way. Despite the fact that both facebook and twitter having similar contents, the initial purpose of these two services were completely different.

The beginning of each social network services started off with different objectives of either meeting new people or keeping in touch with people you already know. Whether updating your status or tweeting, however, the idea behind the function, that is “connecting” with people is the same
