Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement where people get together to protect the planet, and is organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). The movement consists in engaging a massive community or group of people to create awareness of the environmental issues.  Earth Hour became famous after the massive lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Earth Hour is held always on the last Saturday of March between 8.30PM and 9.30PM in your local time zone. The event is held annually worldwide and helps to encourage individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.

  The project I selected was awesome. This was my first time joining a group to promote this event and it was amazing.  It really opened my eyes and now I feel more in care of the environment.  On Saturday, March 28, I went with my wife to a project called Clean Stream. This project consists on cleaning a river and having all the trash sent to the next recycling center. After a few hours before dawn, we went to the Inner Harbor on Baltimore, MD and went to the Science Center. This was really crowded in here and people started spreading the world around the Harbor to let others know about the Earth Hour event and to be environmentally friendly. Multiple signs were around everywhere and most of them were showing the time that the lights were going to be turn off. Baltimore is a big city and the Harbor has millions of lights that make the city even more beautiful but when the lights were off that was something else, beautiful!. The Science Center then started giving away information about the stars and constellations so everybody can looks up and tries to find them. The tourist and people walking around start asking and joining.  All the restaurants next to the bay start turning their candles on and their lamps and at the end, nobody wants the light to be on again.  It was a unique time, really good and memorable.

This project was impressive. I never think that something so simple will make me feel so good. It makes me being more environmentally friendly. My wife and I posted hundreds of pictures on Facebook and suddenly friends started asking and the words and pictures just started being share and now everybody wants to join next year. I will definitely continue to celebrate and will continue modifying my lifestyle. I believe this project will continue to influence worldwide. I think that soon more big companies will start joining and when that happens will be a great day to celebrate.
