THE HIPPIE MOVEMENT

Have You ever the phrase "peace and love" heard?, I'm sure that you relate it to the hippies. But, Who were hippies?, Why were hippies born? to answer these questions, I will talk about of them in this essay.

Hippies were a youth movement; they existed in the last years in the 1960s. This Movement was a movement of young people who were pacifists.

This Movement born in The United States of America in San Francisco. They were characterized by nonviolent anarchy, concern for the environment, the rejection of the materialism of the West and peace around the world.

Hippies formed a politically daring and antiwar counterculture, they were characterized by a psychedelic and colorful style was inspired by hallucinogenic drugs such as marijuana and lysergic acid ( LSD).

They had a very particular fashion in the graphic arts and music of singers such as Janis Joplin and rock bands such as Pink Floyd and one of the most important and influential artists of that time such as John Lennon.

Hippie’s fashion and art were expanded throughout the United States of America and Europe. Positive and negative aspects were left by the hippie movement in society and the youth people in the 60s/70s.

The word hippie derives from hipster English that was often used to describe the previous subculture of beatniks, who also had important base as San Francisco (California). This new subculture inherited some countercultural values of the Beat Generation.

It's called “Hippie” or “Jipi” a counterculture movement as well as the followers of this movement. The hippie movement left many marks on society such as wearing long hair and their particular way of dressing.

Hippies’ fashion was a sign of belonging and countercultural rebellion. Other characteristics associated with them were Brightly colored clothes, long shirts, long pants, Indian and African Clothing, symbols or drawings such as the flower of the American aborigines, life in municipalities, tolerance of homosexuality and bisexuality.

However two of the most important aspects were “free love” which translated as rejection of the institution of marriage and sexual behavior contrary to the dictates of society and churches and the another one about the use of drugs such as marijuana, hashish, hallucinogens LSD .

The creation of this movement was a reaction to the profound changes that occurred in society and culture after World War II.
