I am motivated to study when I think about the consequences of not doing so. One of these consequences is ignorance. Ignorance makes us easy prey to manipulation of personal and social oppression. The class of Human Diversity and Social Interaction was an important tool in learning how to deal with discriminatory processes, abuses of power, and social exclusion. This course provides the fundamentals required to learn how to serve in partnership with quality personal and professional individuals. Similarly it affirmed the value of my Christian faith in the process of service to others.

In the course of the class some of my insights into other cultures or ethnic groups changed. In learning the stories and development processes of people from diverse backgrounds, I was assessing and enriching my knowledge to them. It was very rewarding to learn about groups different from Latinos, the group I belong to, especially Asians, African Americans, and Native Americans. Learning about the role of women in other cultures and countries through the ages was very interesting. Learning more about the history of my gender made me proud of everything that women leaders have attained and continue to work for.

It was very interesting to learn that social work as a profession involves the study of methods and techniques of diagnosis and treatment of social needs, in this course I learned that capabilities of resolution, action, communication, and planning and program management can be developed when you want to help the community. I learned how to enjoy the differences in society and want to study this further in order to be agent of positive change myself. The class helped each student develop our critical spirit and to understand the importance of training to work with multidisciplinary teams in an atmosphere of openness, tolerance and respect for the way of thinking of others.
