Serial killers are complex.

The causes of psychopathy are still a mystery. Serial killers (psychopaths) don’t know what underlay social interactions. They do not feel; they are just cold. The psychology of a serial killer does not include feeling guilty for something; therefore, they do not feel responsible for the consequences of their actions. Serial killers are calculating and manipulative persons that control or want to control others in order to please their own egotist needs by means of charm, intimidation, and occasionally violence (which is caused by a personality disorder); to sum up, they do not care about people.

The psychology of a serial killer is complex; however, it is known that social factors do have an important role in the creation of psychopathy in spite of the intelligence of the individual. According to a recent study of the Psychology Department of the Oxford University, serial killers have a great tendency to be intelligent, having “bright normal” range IQ’s, which means the ratio IQ is between 90-109 (bright) and 110-119 (normal). Their future actions depend mostly on the education they received and the environment they have experienced in their lives. If the psychopath experiences a beautiful, normal and full of love with a caring family and a healthy environment, it is not so probable for him/her to become a serial killer. In fact, not all psychopaths are criminals.

However, not every serial killer falls into a single type; in fact, many of them are more than one type. So the consequences that are applied to a serial killer in the dictum of a trial by a Supreme Court of a State are definitely based in the kind of murder and background of the accused. To summarize, there is not a specific dictum for serial killers in general even though the committed crime is identical to another one committed by another serial killer; which means, the background record (precedents) and classification of the homicide really affect the judge sentence.
