Simple Past

We use the simple past to express that an action started and finished in some specific time in the past.

**REMEMBER NOT ALL THE VERBS END IN “ED”**

How do we form the sentences in simple past form?

(+) Subject + verb (past form) + context

 I finished my master degree in 2011

 You did the diagnostic activity yesterday

 Louis wrote a beautiful essay in the prom

 Josh went to the party last night

 We saw you in the bus stop yesterday

 My parents traveled to London in their Honey Moon

 I read “ Mein kampf” when i was 18

 Subject + Did not + Verb(infinitive) + context

 * In negative structure we don´t use the verb in past form because we use the auxiliary for the past (did).

 * WE CAN USE didn´t instead of did not

Examples

 Peter didn´t do the activities that’s why he didn´t have English exam

 I didn´t go to the movies last week

 Jesse didn´t read the text for the class

 Diana didn´t understand the simple past class

 John Lennon didn´t write “ The fool on the hill”

Questions : Did +Subject+ Infinite?

 Did you do the activities yesterday?

 Did she come to the school last week?

 Did we understand the simple past class?

 Did you watch the soccer game last Friday?

How can we answer the question in simple past tense?

Did you watch the soccer game last Friday?

* Positive Short answer: Yes, I did

*Negative short answer: No I didn´t

*Positive long answer: yes I watched the soccer game last Friday

*Negative long answer: No I didn´t watch the soccer game

 Did she write an email to her husband?

 Yes
