Pied Beauty:

The poem seeks to emphasize god's importance through the writer's Jesuist knowledge. It is used to describe god's creations and actions in order to convince the reader to "praise him" as it says in line 11.The elements of nature are first described as dappled (by mentioning those most appealing for the eyes) Then the author proceeds to mention examples not as "pretty" as the previous one to cover  the entire vision of god as the "glorious father, creator of them all". This is shown in line 9 where it mentions opposites (swift and slow; sweet and sour) going from one extreme to the other to show what he was able to do and get him recognized.

Continuum

The poem follows the author, who is suffering from insomnia and therefore, struggles to fall asleep. His thoughts wonder throughout the poem allowing the reader to follow his words through the time he is awake, or trying to sleep. The moon is mentioned a lot, probably because it is an important element of nature visible at knight, which makes it a great source of inspiration. It is also good to emphasize the fact that this happens throughout the night.

Since the author grew up in a very religious family, there are few religious aspects in the poem. It is composed of 7 stanzas, which may be a possible reference to the seven days of creation.  This can be shown also in the 7th stanza, as the author says "…on the author, cringing demiurge, who picks up his litter and his tools and paces me back to bed…", which makes references to the last day of god's creation, known as the "day for rest".

Similarities

What both poems have in common are the religious influences, focused mostly on God's creations. They also make mentions of nature, and build the poem around the environment and images they provide (for example: Moon= At night)

Differences

While the Pied Beauty focuses on the creations to spread god's recognition through the reader, Continuum on the other hand is slightly based on the concept of god's creation itself. It also contains other concepts such as Insomnia, and the passing of time.

My personal response

Both poems in my opinion managed to clarify their messages properly, although I found Pied Beauty much more simple at delivering the central idea. However I found Continuum more appealing because it can have various interpretations (depending on if you want to focus on the struggle to sleep of the author, time passing by as thoughts flow, or the religious aspect and role of god), rather than just praising god for his creations.
