CARNIVAL IN RIVER OF JANEIRO

This carnival is celebrated in Brazil in February, 4 days before to the Ash Wednesday of the catholic religion; that happens due to the fasting of these days the Brazilians were eating and drinking a lot  to support the fasting.

The carnival of river of Janeiro was initiated in 1720 when immigrant Portuguese came to Brazil, but it was in the 19th century when people began to celebrate by music and dances on the streets using masks and making parades. In 1932 the first unofficial parade was done and in 1935 the first official parade was done on the square eleven.

In 1984 the carnival was done in the gangplank do samba, then It  was called “Two Parades Avenue” and today Gangplank is called A Teacher Darcy Ribeiro, a sambódromo known throughout the world. It has capacity for 62.000 persons.

There are different ways of taking part in this party, such as dancing in one of the schools of samba or as spectator encouraging your favorite school for 1 hour and 20 minutes during the presentation of every school. You can disguise to take part during 2 days in this festival, where 14 schools of samba dance, 7 the first day and 7 on the second day with a specific topic and disguises.

The schools are formed even by 4000 members in 8 coaches, and compete in the sambódromo. Also there are infantile competitions and the winners do their presentation the following weekend. Out of the sambódromo also there are parades on the streets and popular dances with bands and contests done by the whole city.

This one is one of the most famous carnivals of the whole world, in the city river of Janeiro you can visit the statue of the “Redeeming Christ” and the Maracaná stadium is one of the biggest in the world.
