ggcDEVELOPMENT

1) Where is the FANBOYS or conjunctions, connectors?

There are words that we use to join two or more sentences or two words within the same sentence The words or phrases that connect should be the same or similar.

2) Importance of the FANBOYS or conjunctions, connectors

There are responsible for forming or producing a coherent text, because they must unite the sentences (as well as the prepositions join the words). Conjunctions that are formed by more than one word are known as conjunctive sentences.

3) Use and types of FANBOYS or conjunctions, connectors

A) Coordinated conjunctions

Coordinated conjunctions are conjunctions that join two words or groups of words that fulfill the same function in the sentence. The coordinated conjunctions are the following:

There are seven coordinating conjunctions in the English language.

An easy way to remember coordinating conjunctions is to remember the word FANBOYS.

  • F = for (as)
  • A = and (Y)
  • N = nor (neither)
  • B = but (but)
  • O= or (or)
  • Y = yet (more)
  • S = so (so)

These are the 7 most used but also others like

B) Copulative connectors

Copulative connectors have the function of joining two events. These events do not have to be always on the same grammatical level, but one is subordinate to another. In addition to adding ideas to those already mentioned in the previous sentence, the copulative connectors can also serve to counterpose them, as well as to balance them in level of importance.

  • and
  • not only [...] but also
  • not only [...] but [...] as well
  • both [...] and
  • no sooner [...] than

C) Dysfunctional Connectors

Unlike the copulative connectors, the disjunctive connectors serve to give one or several alternatives to the idea proposed by the previous sentence. As in the case of most English connectors, the disjunctive connectors also have their employees for denial. In some cases they also express the circumstance, that is, they mention the fact that it can happen if another event is not fulfilled.

  • or
  • either [...] or
  • neither [...] nor
  • whether [...] or
  • or else
  • otherwise

D) Conditional connectors

As its name implies, conditional connectors serve to express a condition. They are used to unite two ideas so that one depends on the satisfactory result or not on the other. They can express specific cases or more general truths. The conditional connectors are used, above all, in the four conditionals of English.

  • if / whether
  • unless
  • provided / providing / as long as
  • in case

E) Concessive connectors

Concessive connectors serve to express an objection to the main idea of the phrase. Usually this objection is presented as a negative event to the positive fact expressed by the main phrase. It is important to pay attention to the use of each of the forms here expressed, because although they seem to mean the same, each concessive connector is used under specific conditions.

  • although / though / even though
  • even if
  • not even if
  • despite / in spite of
  • regardless of

F) Concluding Connectors

The conclusive connectors are used to give conclusion and / or circumstance to the event proposed in the main sentence. Unlike what happened with the concessive connectors, in the conclusive connectors the biggest problem that we can find is in the formality of each of the connectors. It is necessary to pay special attention to the registry used in each moment in order to adapt to the situation.
