MODES AND TENSES VERBAL

in this article we use the modes and tenses.

In Castilian verbs are conjugated in four modes: indicative, subjunctive, conditional and imperative. Each mode has one or more times and times compounds. Read more if you want to learn how to use the modes and times.

Indicative Mode

The indicative mood is used to describe the world of reality: what is (present), which was (past tense), which will be (future).

Present

is used to express actions that occur at the time spoken. For example:

Juanita sings a song.

Used to express actions that occur frequently. For example:

Lydia never has breakfast in the morning.

It can be used to express future actions. For example:

Next summer my friends go on vacation to the United States.

Used to express orders. For example:

Now go home and Joseph bring the book.

It can be used to refer to past actions. For example:

Yesterday was with Charlie in the park and suddenly he comes and says Carla: Who do you expect?

Preterit

Used to describe an action that takes place in the past, without indicating whether or not finished, while the perfect tense tells us that the action has been completed. For example:

It is used to talk about habitual actions in the past. For example:

Pepe read many comics as a kid.

Used to give details such as: time, location, time, years, feelings, mental and physical characteristics.

It was cold at night.

Past indefinite

It is also called present perfect simple.

It is used to talk about past events. Whenever actions are completed.

What happened?

Usually the following time expressions used with the past tense: yesterday, yesterday, last night, once, twice, last week, etc. . . .

My brother arrived yesterday.

You can find the preterit and imperfect in the same sentence.

When we sailed last Sunday we dropped a huge downpour.

Future

It is used to discuss subsequent actions while they are speaking. There is always a measure of uncertainty. You can never be sure of the performance of the action described. For example:

Next week I will write.

The future tense is also used to express ...

speculation ... this time:

What time is it?

Probability ... this time:

They will be four.

Indirect ... quote:

Elena says that will come next week.

Subjunctive mood

the subjunctive mood is used to express concepts that are hypothetical, contrary to fact, that incorporate the expression of the feelings of the speaker towards a state or action.

Present

Used to be + adjective expressions where the event is specified, but the speaker's opinion towards a state or hypothetical action. For example:

It may rain tomorrow.
