THE ROARING 20’S

Was an age of dramatic social and political change. For the first time more people lived in cities than in farms. Wealth doubled between 1920 and 1929. This economic growth swept people into an affluent but unfamiliar “consumer society”.

GREAT DEPRESSION

It was a direct cause of the rise of extremism in Germany leading to World War II.

1. Stock market crash : lost more than 40 billion dollars.

2. Bank failures: People lost their savings.

3. Reduction in purchasing across the board: People didn’t buy, lost appliances and jobs.

4. American Economic Policy with Europe: Businesses began failing, tax was high for imports so there was less trade between America and Foreign countries.

5. Drought conditions: People couldn’t pay taxes and other debts and people lost their lands selling them for no profit.

WEMAR GERMANY

After Germany lost WWI a new democratic government of was declared in Feb. 1919 at the small town of Weimar.

Depended on American loans which had been propping up their economy since 1924, and no further loans were issued from late 1929.

Beer Hall Putsh: On Nov. 1923 Hitler and the Nazi Party led a coalition group. It began in Munich aiming to seize control of the state government.

The German hyperinflation of 1923: The inflation was caused by the government issuing a flood of new money, causing prices to rise.

NAZISM IN JAPAN AND CHINA DURING DEPRESSION

Nazism is a form of socialism (organization in which the means of production and distribution of goods are owned and controlled by groups or by the government) featuring racism and expansionism and obedience to a strong leader.

Japanese ruling powers were military in origin with centuries of tradition behind them. Japan’s ruling was not a political party.

LEAGUE OF NATIONS

Had no authority to raise an army or to enforce economic sanctions. The effect of the Great Depression on the League of Nations was war.

JAPAN’S INVASION OF MANCHURIA AND WHAT THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS DID ABOUT IT?

In the 1930’s the Japanese controlled the Manchurian railway. In Sept. 1931 they claimed that Chinese soldiers had sabotaged the railway, and attacked the Chinese Army. By Feb. 1932, the Japanese had conquered the whole Manchuria.

Thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed.

NAZI GERMANY PULLS OUT OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS

Developed in 1919 at the Paris, peace conference, hoping that the league would ensure that the WWI truly was “The War to end all wars”. Its aim was to give all countries voice, to promote self-determination and to unite the world.

In 1926 peace loving, Germany joined but it would only a member for 7 years.

The League was disbanded when Hitler became German Chancellor.

JAPAN AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS

Japan joined the League of Nations in 1920 as a charter (an arrangement with group) member. Until conflict arose between Japan and the organization. The picture of Japan as a positive contributor to international comity is not the conventional view of the country in the early and mid-20 century. Rather, this period is usually depicted in Japan and across as a history of incremental Imperialism and intensifying militarism, culminating in war.

THE SOVIET UNION AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.

The Soviet Union soon became apparent with its occupation of Eastern Poland in Sept. 1939 ostensibly with the intention of protecting Russian “blood brothers”.
