Committee: Disec: Disarmament and international security

Delegation: Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Premise: Discuss about the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, making emphasis in the crisis between U.S and DPRK, and a possible WWIII.

Delegate: Nataly Chacón

Currently, the government of the United States of America and the Democratic Peolple´s Republic of Korea government are risking world´s peace because of the recent conflicts and tensions they are facing. There is a chance that there is a nuclear war if any of the countries involved decide to attack. Hence, some people already are talking about it as the third world war. Moreover North Korea doesn´t want to sign the Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons making the situation more worrisome. In the committee the delegates will try to solve this matter by discussing possible ways to persuade those countries that do not agree with this treaty, and moderate the use of nuclear weapons. All this is due to avoid a possible war not only of two countries (U.S and DPRK), but South Korea, Iran, China and many other countries that could suffer the consequences if there was a nuclear conflict.

North Korea in a first moment ratified the treaty on December 12, 1985, but gave notice of withdrawal from the treaty on January 10, 2003, however the withdrawal became effective in April 10, 2003 making North Korea the first state ever to withdraw from the treaty. On October 2 of the next year, the North Korea foreign minister announced that his country was planning to conduct a nuclear test “in the future”, that future was only 7 days later when the United States Geological Survey detected a magnitude 4.3 seismic event indicating a nuclear test.

North Korean First Vice Minister Kang Sok Ju at one point admitted the existence of a uranium enrichment program, Pakistan's then-President Musharraf revealed that the A.Q. Khan proliferation network had provided North Korea with a number of gas centrifuges designed for uranium enrichment. Additionally, press reports have cited U.S. officials to the effect that evidence obtained in dismantling Libya’s WMD programs points toward North Korea as the source for Libya's uranium hexafluoride (UF6) -- which, if true, would mean that North Korea has a uranium conversion facility for producing feedstock for centrifuge enrichment.
