Have you ever wonder why we haven’t had a Third World War? What would have happened if United States had never launched the atomic bombs to Japan? Well, (Statement of purpose) through this speech you will realize the importance of the existence of nuclear weapons. As we know, there has been nuclear technology since the end of the Second World War, but no one has ever used it. Most of you will think that is a bad idea the existence of nuclear weapons, but is not about launch them, is about the symbol of the power it holds. The logic and the history would tell us that, when we created a new weapon, this new weapon is used in a future war, but since the existence of nuclear weapons, there hasn’t been any “big” war between the powerful countries. This means that

(Thesis Statement) Nuclear weapons are necessary to stay in peace:

I. They have prevented future wars and conflicts

II. Nuclear weapons exist and it is impossible to get rid of them.

III. We may need them for something other than war

One of the reasons that we haven’t had World War Three is because nuclear weapons are a deterrent. Other countries know, whether they have nuclear weapons or not, that a country armed with nuclear weapons can really hit back hard. No one is willing to lose land and resources, so they are not really interested to jump into a fight. Because of the terrible destruction brought on by a nuclear war, the major powers doesn’t want to engage in a warfare with any but the most defenseless of nations. Additionally, with nuclear weapons and agreements between nations, it stops the powers to start a war with just anyone, since there is always the possibility of consequences to their actions.

If we decide to get rid of all the nuclear armament, how could we be so sure that Russia, China or other countries that “secretly” have nuclear weapons, would do the same? They might say they do, but they could hide their nuclear bombs and use them if needed. What would stop other nations, on the cusp of nuclear bombs, from building them and using them against any country? By making an agreement to get rid of all nuclear weapons, it will just increase the suspicion between nations. Getting rid of all nuclear weapons will make the world even less safe by the conflicts and the bad environment provoked.

Also, nuclear weapons could be useful in a different way. Science is always making comments about meteors and other space debris heading toward the earth. If we were to get rid of all of our nuclear weapons, what would we use if we actually needed to stop one of these life-killing events from destroying the earth? We might need them in the future for asteroids, meteors, etc. they can be used for deflecting the path of asteroids, avoiding reaching earth. We need something like a nuclear bomb to take care of this problem. If they are all gone, the entire planet could be history.

In conclusion, I am sure that now you realize that nuclear weapons: (Summary)

I. Are necessary to stay in peace between nations, because countries are not interested to start a nuclear war because of the disastrous consequences.

II. They exist and we can’t go back in that fact, it’s impossible to get rid of them due to the fact that countries like United States, Russia, etc. will not trust in other countries.

III. We could use them in a life-killing event like an asteroid, without them we would not have any real tool to divert its path/destroy it.

What I would expect of this speech is to make you to understand that nuclear weapons are something irreversible, and because of that is impossible to disappear them. (Memorable concluding remark) And remember, the purpose of nuclear weapons isn’t about killing, is about intimidation. That's what has kept us in peace since the Second World War.
