Ffiller words are an apparently meaningless word, phrase, or sound that marks a pause in speech. Also known as a pause filler or hesitation form.

Some of the common filler words in English are um, uh, er, ah, like, okay, right, and you know.

There are some other advices you might want to know. The most important tip is simply reducing the use of filler words to three, which would be the initial goal. For reducing those filler words, you have to be aware the situations that make those words appear and try to avoid them. It is known that there are two moments of the speech when the speaker usually uses those words. First at the beginning of the sentence, when you are answering a question and the second moment is in the middle of the sentence when you are going to pass. A great advice for making effective this is to record yourself when you are talking and write down which filler words you use and in which situations, and also recording you answering a question and search for those words at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence. With the notes already taken, now you can start to reduce their frequency.

Instead of using filler words, you can prolong the sound of vowels in words, in order to gain more time to organize your thoughts. Other thing you have to keep in mind is avoiding to adding “ammm” at the end of the sentences. And a third advice would be to wait a short time before you answer a question or make a comment, in order to organize in a better way your thoughts.
