WATER CYCLE QUESTIONNAIRE

1. What does the water cycle do to the Earth?

1. EVAPORATION

2. TRANSPIRATION

3. CONDENSATION

4. INFILTRATION

5. SURFACE RUNOFF

2. What’s the name of the zone where the sunlight doesn’t reach?

Aphotic Zone.

3. Where does the Humboldt Current come from?

The Humbolt Current starts at the top of the Southern Central Zone of our country (central zone of Chile).Pacific Ocean in front of Chile.

4. Why is the water at the beach liquid and the water on the mountains solid? Name 2 environmental conditions.

Because the water in the mountains is at high altitude, with low temperatures that freeze the water make it solid.

Examples of environmental conditions: snow or frost.

The sea water is at lower altitude with higher temperatures and sea salt prevents the freezing.

5. What do we call the tide when it reaches its maximum level?

High Tide.

6. What do we call the tide when it reaches its minimum level?

Low Tide

7. The photic and aphotic zones are defined according to its…?

About arrive or don´t arrive the sunlight…

Sunlight reaches = Photic Zone

No sunlight reaches =Aphotic Zone

8. Explain condensation:

Water in its gaseous state cools and forms clouds. It returns to Earth in the form of rain, snow or hail.

9. Explain evaporation:

The sun heats the surface of Earth and the water in the rivers, seas and oceans. The water turns to gas and passes to the air.

10. Explain accumulation:

The water from condensation and precipitation accumulates in oceans, rivers and lakes. After that, the accumulated water will evaporate. A portion of the accumulated water is in the ground to allow the existence of trees and plants.

11. Explain the cleaning process of the water cycle:

The water is cleaned in the process of water cycle, because the water in the 3 states: liquid, solid and gaseous is recycled. The contact with de sun, wind and ground allows the natural balance and clean the water.

12. What positive actions can you take to prevent water waste and contamination? 2 examples.

• I can dispose of used oil in a bottle rather than throw it in the sewer. 1 liter of waste oil contaminates 100 liters of water.

• I can put a bottle in the toilet tank to save water.

13. Why do lakes get easily polluted?

Human building near of lakes contaminated its. Because many toxic industrial wastes reach the lakes. Besides the pesticides used for plant fall into lakes or rivers.

14. Humans need water not only to live. Name 2 facts:

• For agriculture and food production for human consumption.

• To produce energy, such as hydropower.

15. Name 2 ways humans use water to produce energy.

• Hydropower: Water in a turbine generating power about pressure.

• Heating Boiler: The water is heated in a boiler to heat generating caloric energy.

16. Name 1 effect that the Humboldt current has in the north of Chile.

The Humbolt Current produced lower rainfall in the north of Chile. For that reason we have the driest desert of the world: Atacama Desert.

17. How do hot and cold currents overlap? Which one goes up and which one goes down?

The warm water goes up.

The cold water from below press upwards and move the warm water currents.

18. What does the El Niño Phenomenon bring?

A significant increase in rainfall in South America.

19. How does the water cycle start?

The water cycle star with the Evaporation, the sun heats the surface of Earth and the water in the rivers, seas and oceans. The water turns to gas and passes to the air.

20. How many times a day does the tide occur?

The change between high tide and low tide happens twice a day.

21. Where can we find evaporation on the planet?

In the forested zones, for example in the jungle in the Amazon, in Brazil or Ecuador.

22. Answer true or false and why: all rivers have fresh water.

True: The water of rivers come from the melting snow of mountains or from the precipitation, so only fresh water. When the evaporation happens in the seas the salt keep on the oceans.

23. Answer true or false and why: If the ocean was red light would reach the bottom.

False, red wavelength can reach top section from the sea. Blue wavelengths can reach lower sections from the sea.

24. Where can we find more pressure in the ocean?

In the bottom, because the pressure increases with the deeper of the ocean.

25. Besides finding water on Earth where else can we find it? From

On Mars satellites have photographed water sectors…
