Up to this point in the novel, we have learned many things about the past and ongoing relationship between Mrs. Cheveley, a gold digger, described as the Femme Fatale and dangerous opportunistic women, and Lord Goring, a young rich kid who has no occupation and does nothing but enjoy life and change his clothes atleast five times a day. As Lord Goring is introduced as some sort of hero, the relationship between the characters up to this point is linked by a diamond brooch, which Lord Goring recognizes (he gave it to someone a long time ago) and asks Mrs. Chiltern to inform him if anyone asks about it. The brooch would then link the two as Mrs. Cheveley attempts to steal the precious brooch.

I believe that Lord Goring will rise up and become an “Anti-Cheveley” gentleman as he will try to uncover the truth about Mrs. Cheveley in the future. Since he has noticed what a true demon she really is and how noxious she can be when she wants something. Up to now this appears as an apalling theme and perhaps Mrs. Cheveley will be discovered by everyone in the near future.

This relationship will have a major impact in the play, as it will pretty much determine the relationship between Robert Chiltern and his wife, Gertrude who has stated that she does not want Robert anywhere near this dangerous power-craving women and threathened him with divorce if he continues to see her. The outcome of the past and present relationship between these characters will determine the relationships between many characters in the play, something that we, as readers will surely want to keep an eye on.
