Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. Since he was little, he was a fan of sailing in the seas and was always traveling around. In that time, people always thought the world was flat, not round, but Christopher decided this was not true, and he was willing to prove this and how big the world really was. While he lived in Portugal, he told the king of Portugal, King John, his idea to sail to the East Indies. But he wasn’t planning on going the easy was to it. He would travel west instead of east. King John didn’t like this, because like others, he didn’t believe this was possible. Columbus then moved to Spain, and told the idea to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, and they approved it. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave Columbus 3 ships, “La Niña”, “La Pinta”, and “Santa Maria” and 90 sailors to make the trip to the “New World”, as they called it. This trip started on August 2, 1492. They discovered the “New World” on October 12, 1492. They returned to Spain on January 16, and arrived there on March 4. This discovery caused more trips to America, and interactions with the Americans.
