NATIVE AMERICANS

INTRODUCTION

For two decades, scientists have studied genetic data to debate whether ancestors of Native Americans emigrated to the New World in one wave or successive waves. The issue of provenance, is a classic of scientific debates and has led to many theories.

One of his well-known theories about the arrival of man in America, Native Americans descended from hunter-gatherer groups of Siberian origin who migrated to America by the Bering elEstrecho during the last glaciation.

Native Americans would have come from somewhere in eastern Asia about 12,000 years ago, at the end of the Würm glaciation. Glaciers retained a large amount of water, and the Bering Sea had a level of about 100 meters below the present, so that Asia and America were joined.

This would have allowed the inhabitants of Siberia penetrate through that point in the new continent. Then they would have moved south along the coast. Native Americans are more closely related to each other than with any other existing Asian populations, except those living on the edge of the Bering Strait.

Although the Bering land bridge ceased to exist 10,500 years ago, Beringia as a territorial unit, natural and cultural remained in existence until the present. Today Beringia is a region populated by ancient cultures of northwestern Alaska and the Russian Far East, still separated by the waters and belonging to different continents, have a common language and traditions, and depend on the same environment.

Several researchers concluded that the simplest explanation for the distribution of the allele was that all modern Native Americans, Greenlanders and the original peoples of the former western Beringia descended from a common founding population.
