The Dog Suicide Bridge.

Where is it located?

Located near the village of Milton in the burgh of Dumbarton, Scotland which was built in 1859.

In 1859, James White (bourgeois landowner), acquired land on the outskirts of town to build a small mansion retreat. Filled with riches and influences hired the best architects of the time to create the design of what would be the best village of the district, however to gain access to the villa had to cross a river (the bed of Clyde), then had to create a bridge that has a similar style to the mansion and Victorian elegance anticipate of it, is how the 'Overtoun bridge' was born.

Why have so many dogs leapt to their deaths from Overtoun Bridge?

During one six-month period last year, five dogs jumped to their deaths.

All of the deaths have occurred at virtually the same spot, between the final two parapets on the right-hand side of the bridge, and almost all have been on clear, sunny days.

The number of suicidal acts is between 80 and 100 dogs in last 50 years, with more than 5 dogs per quarter.

Furthermore, the dogs which have perished have all-been long-nosed breeds: Labradors, collies and retrievers.
