Utopia refers to the idea of a perfect world. However, dystopia means a world which humans try to make it perfect. The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry and the movie The Village by M. Night Shyamalan present an example of both themes. In the literary works, the Elders tried to make an utopia keeping everything in secret, but what they really made was a dystopia. But, does dystopia is a great idea? Having no feelings, emotions and memories is not a part of the human nature.

A dystopia is not a great idea because the "government" controls the people's life by restricting many things; this includes the emotions and feelings as in The Giver. In the novel, the people didn't feel anything because they were under the control of the Elders, who made a society in which everyone were the same, like robots. But, emotions and feelings are a fundamental part in the life of a human being. This marks a person's personality, character, qualities, his faults and his ability to create and solve problems. Thus, the feelings are the phenomena that we are, from the simplest to the most complex and unique individuals, capable of feel very different things and be completely different. In like manner that the feelings and emotions help humans to know themselves, the memories help too.

In The Giver, the Elders assigned to a person a job that consisted in receiving the memories so that others will not remember anything. Nevertheless, memory plays a very important role in the life of man, since it is part of their consciousness and forms the basis of their identity. Without it they would not preserve knowledge and therefore, they wouldn't know how to move in the world. Also, it allows man to keep throughout their history: their customs, beliefs and traditions. In addition, memory is very important because if someone makes a mistake and is about to commit it in the future, that person can search in his memories and avoid committing it. In short, it helps people to grow and mature. After all, dystopia has its advantage, as well as having no feelings, emotions and memories.

Many people can’t control their feelings and emotions, and this has negative consequences. This can be seen in The Village when Noah stabs Lucius because of jealousy. Also, a dystopian society can live without any problems because they're like robots. Moreover, sometimes having no memories is good because the people can't remember some bad things that happened. Finally, it is good because people can’t suffer like in The Giver.

As has been noted, there are more negative aspects than positives about dystopia. Humans were created for many things such as: believing, feeling, remembering, and specially for thinking. This means, that the dystopia isn’t made for us.
