W.W.1 History Essay

Hypothesis- "The entry of the U.S.A. to World War 1 was inevitable."

I believe that the hypothesis of "The entry of the United States of America to World War 1 was inevitable" is true. In this essay I will prove my point by giving evidence supporting my argument in order to clarify that the U.S.A did not had any choice but to declare war on Germany. The fact that Germany broke international law against the U.S.A. should be enough evidence to prove my point, but I will still give you more arguments to convince you that the statement is clearly correct. Firstly, I will discuss a telegram from Germany to Mexico, the message at it carried and the impact it had on the war. Secondly, I will use a primary source of a propaganda poster from Germany directed to Mexicans and the message in the propaganda. Finally I will analyze a photo of German unrestricted submarine warfare in American waters and state why this made the U.S.A. declare war in them.

Firstly, Germany was planning to attack the U.S.A. with the help of Mexico. As we can see in source #25, Germany's prime minister Zimmerman sent a telegram to Mexico's president, asking the country to become an ally in exchange of getting the lost land in the U.S.A. The problem was that the telegram never arrived to Mexico. It was intercepted by England, decodyfied and translated into english. England sent the translated telegram in english to the news and it was published all over the world. This way, the U.S.A. found out what Germany was planning. They were being provoked.

Secondly, Germany started propaganda in Mexico to get them to join the war with them. As we can see in source #21, Mexicans saw the poster and did not know what to do. Propaganda said messages like "Join the German army and you will get back the land that you deserve" and "Lets make war together and you will get rewarded." This acts are evidence that proves the point that the entry of the U.S.A. to World War 1 was clearly inevitable.
