Do You Make Your Own Decisions?

I have always considered society as a square. In order to be an active part of society, you must seek for normality that kills individualism. Society wants to fit everyone in this box that doesn't allow anything different in it, and if they do, they make it small and unworthy. In order to do this, there is peer pressure, an automatic mindset, and there is an infinite list of examples. I have never wanted to get married, so this time I told my family, and they freaked out. Everyone tried to convince me that I had to get married because if I didn't I would be losing everything good in life. At that moment, I realized that society sets a chip especially for girls, which is: graduate from high school, go to college, get married, and have kids. Most of the girls don't even ask themselves if that's what they want. The stereotypes have dehumanized people, and that's why mentally challenged, elderly, women, and everyone who has a "weakness" are unworthy.

We think only teens suffer from peer pressure, but all society suffers from it. We let other people decide what we want to do, leading to regret and sadness. In Of Mice and Men where we see peer pressure is in Candy. When Carlson wants to kill his dog, Candy is looking for the approval of someone to support him on saving his dog. We know that Candy´s dog is a symbol for Candy himself because he is old, and for the farm he is useless. That´s why he was looking so desperately for support in, not killing him, but because no one did, he let them killed the dog and replaced him a new one. Candy didn't want to kill his dog, but because of the need to fit in this box of normality, of what everyone wants, he killed it. Candy is one of the oldest on the farm and still; his coworkers affect him. The peer pressure from society won't stop unless you do not let it affect you.

Society gives us a mindset; this varies in either you are women or men. Curley´s wife had this idea that she wanted to be an actress, but society crushed her dreams. When she was just fifteen years old, society grabbed her dream and tried to take advantage of her using her idea of success. Just after the man who attempted to trick her, and her mother, tell them she could never do it, she gave up on her dream. After she had given up on her dream, her automatic mindset told her that she had to marry someone, so she did, and she married someone she didn't love. She didn't even like him because she was happy that Lennie broke his hand, and she was so alone because he didn't pay attention to her. She was trying so hard for someone to talk to her and for someone to pay attention to her, that the only way she got that was by flirting. She used her body for attention because to her, that is the only valuable thing about her. Curley´s wife´s mother parted her from her dream because she thought going the
